MAURITANIA
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a land of vast space. Named after an ancient Berber kingdom, this sparsely populated but ethnically diverse country unites the Arab cultures of the Maghreb in the north, the fiercely independent tribes of the Sahara, and the diverse peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa. This brings a chance to bridge cultures, as well as many significant challenges, including ethnic tension, religious extremism, and modern slavery. Though perched on the westernmost edge of the Old World from the days of camel caravans to the modern day, Mauritania remains centrally important to the MENA region’s past and its future.
