TURKEY

With a large population, economy, and close ties with the US and EU, Turkey has for decades been an economic and cultural presence in the region. Once a candidate for EU ascension, Turkey has distanced itself from old allies and is now pursuing an independent foreign policy as it cultivates influence in the region. After considerable participation in the Syrian Civil War, Turkey has quickly gained power and influence in the region. As it has charted a new foreign policy, Turkey has also rejected its secular tradition, opting instead for a more religious course under its current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
