Black Earth by Fazil Say

Review by Eunsoo Kang

The short:

Black Earth is a contemporary piano piece by Turkish pianist, Fazil Say. Masterfully using a series of unconventional techniques, this piece depicts the painful story of loss and loneliness.

The long:

Black Earth utilizes the interesting technique of muting the piano to reproduce the sound of the Saz, a traditional Turkish string instrument. The composition itself contains a wide variety of piano styles such as romantic, folklore, and jazz to constantly captivate the audience. Black Earth was inspired by Kara Toprak, a popular song in Turkey. The composer, Asik Veysel, was one of the last great Turkish balladeers and a cultural symbol of the Turkish republic.

To listen or not to listen:

Listen! Black Earth is truly a refreshing contemporary piece for the piano. Not only does it captivate listeners with its originality, but it also carries the legacy of Asil Veysel. Fazil Say is one of the most respected Turkish Artists. He has gained international recognition for both his virtuosic performances and dazzling compositions. Through his innovation and talent, some recognize Say as one of the greatest artists of the twenty-first century.
